The Dun Building was named for Robert G. Dun, who founded the company that eventually became Dun & Bradstreet, the nation's oldest and largest credit reporting agency. The Dun Building is an example of the Renaissance–Revival style. With its sturdy exterior of yellow brick, tile, steel and concrete, it is believed to be the first truly fire–resistant building and, at 10 stories, it was also the first skyscraper in Buffalo.

The richly decorated exterior includes a frieze with swag carvings and egg and dart moldings wrapped around the 3rd floor. A cornice of scrolled medallions previously capped the building, and the remaining reveats have an elaborate foliate pattern. Above each entrance there is a round window with egg and dart molding.

The site was also home to Buffalo's first school, erected in 1807 and burned by the British in 1813.
