This 40–story complex was conceived during the 1960s as a major urban renewal project. It was constructed at
a cost of $50 million by Boston developers Cabot, Cabot, and Forbes Co. largely for tenant Marine Midland Bank. Marine
was acquired during the 1980s by global bank HSBC, and the complex currently serves as the headquarters of HSBC Bank
USA. The project was the largest single development in Buffalo at the time of its construction and it continues to
define the skyline.
Looking further south on Washington Street is the HSBC Arena, which has served as the home of the NHL Buffalo
Sabres (hockey), Buffalo Bandits (lacrosse), and Buffalo Destroyers (arena football) since 1996. The Arena
also serves as a site for major concerts and other attractions. The structure is 156 feet tall and includes
a five–story pavilion that has a capacity of 5,000. The building is situated in the Cobblestone Historic District,
a collection of cobblestone streets and buildings dating from the mid–19th century.
Continue one block West on Seneca Street to Pearl Street. Turn right and head one block North.
