Date Built

When the YMCA building at 45 Mohawk Street opened in 1903, it was considered to be one of the most elegant structures in the U.S., with its Greek Revival columns and French Chateau design. It served as the flagship location of the local chapter of the YMCA organization founded in London, England in 1844. Buffalo's society, only the second in the U.S. to be organized, was founded in 1852 at the Old Pearl Street Methodist Church (now demolished). The building remained an active YMCA facility until 1978. A local developer renovated the structure in 1984 and it currently contains offices, retail space, and a health club.
